Sustainability - Climate Crew

Climate Crew’s mission is to create a more sustainable school environment by engaging, informing and acting for our future. Climate Crew and Bushranger Cadets are committed to caring for country, supporting biodiversity and creating green spaces for learning, health and happiness.

We are working hard to help everyone in the school community understand their responsibility for their behaviour as a group, thereby minimising the school’s impact on the environment and ultimately helping Australia reduce its carbon emissions by 2050, with significant reductions by 2030, to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and the Department of Education’s Caring for Country Together: A Sustainability Framework (2021).

1.       Keeping our School Beautiful

Climate Crew organises school clean ups at least once per term and continues to manage a large Recycling Station in the library through partnering with many organisations. The school has implemented paper recycling boxes in every classroom, Terracycle boxes and recycling in the staff room. In 2023, rubbish collection by students was implemented as part of yard duty.

2.      Greening our School

In 2023, Climate Crew launched its first Garden Project with Ms Reynolds. The aim of the garden is to supply the canteen and Home Economics with herbs. Garden beds, plants and fencing have been organised and the gardeners are on board to help with reticulation.

3.      Friday Forms for the Future (4F) Program with BTH 12R’s™

Inspired by Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for the Future movement, Climate Crew’s “Friday Forms for the Future” (4F Program) was launched in 2022. During Form, every second Friday, Climate Crew leaders organise environmental-related activities for all Year 7, 8 and 9 students. Since 2022, UWA’s Grand Challenges grant has sponsored the 4F program, allowing us to expand our program. 4F has now started to follow the themes of Bottle Top Hill’s (BTH) 12R’s™ sustainability framework; Swap Market, Repair Challenge, E-Waste Collection, Waste-Free Lunch Challenge, Recycling Challenge, Present Wrapping following the Japanese art of Furoshiki using unwanted fabric and more.

4.      Outreach and Fundraising

We can only make the world more sustainable by working together! Climate Crew has many partners, many of whom have supported our annual film fundraisers and joined us in our missions.

And DSHS P&C Association, Duncraig SHS Bushranger Cadets, Canteen, Gardeners, Library team, Home Economics Team, HASS team, VET team and more.

We are proud to be a WasteSorted School since 2024.

Duncraig SHS is proud to be the lead school of the Sustainable Schools WA North Metro Hub.

5. Containers for Change

Containers for Change is a way to help recycle old plastic bottles and cans while also cleaning up the environment. Climate Crew collect bottles and cans for Containers for Change at school events like sports carnivals and Alive Week. All funds raised (10c per item) are used to support Climate Crew projects, events and competitions. Our code is C10542679.

Founded in 2021, Climate Crew has grown to more than 30 active students from Years 7 to 12. Overseen by Ms Kelly Reynolds, with Student Councillors and volunteers from staff and our board. Meetings to collaborate happen during recess and form on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Sustainability Leader: Sustainability Portfolio
Allura Predovnik & Sophie Stewart, Year 12 Student Councillors

Allura –I joined Climate Crew during year 12, drawn by the close collaboration with the Student Council’s Sustainability Portfolio. Being part of this team of like-minded students, supported by incredible teachers, is something I’m very passionate about. This is a refreshing environment where students are encouraged to pursue their passions and practice leadership skills. Together, we use our collective knowledge and resources to work together towards a common goal of creating a more sustainable world for future generations.

Sophie – I joined the Sustainability Portfolio and Climate Crew at the beginning of 2024 because I wanted to advocate for climate change. The concerns and goals that are at the heart of these groups align with my values and beliefs, so it felt very natural and right to join.

Climate Crew Leader
Kane Gablich, Year 11

I joined Climate Crew in Year 8 because I think it’s important to take care of our environment, which is something we do a lot in Cadets. I really enjoy keeping an eye on all the different projects in the Climate Crew and helping students and teacher to get things done.

Mission Leader: Recycling
Sofia (Vienna) Peneranda, Year 10

I joined Climate Crew in Year 8, Semester Two. I joined because we were invited by our friends’ older sister, Emily Thorpe. I have been passionate about the environment since childhood, especially protecting native wildlife and coastal areas. I hope to continue this as a member of the Climate Crew to promote recycling in our school.

Mission Leader: School Garden
Carys Williams, Year 11

Back in 2021 I joined Climate Crew to hopefully make small but impactful changes to what we do around school. I am the leader of the garden crew and our crew is working on producing herbs and hopefully other vegetables to reduce cost and waste for food in the home economics department, so far we have built our raised garden beds and hoping to plant seeds very soon.

Mission Leader: Friday Forms for the Future (4F Program)
Mika Terreblanche, Year 8

I joined the Climate Crew in 2023 in year 7 when I first got to the school. I enjoy being a part of the Climate Crew because it is such a welcoming group and it feels great to be among others who have a passion for sustainability and climate action.

Mission Leader: Outreach
Lily Tomkinson, Year 12

I joined Climate Crew in Year 9 when it first started because I feel passionate about the environment. I’ve enjoyed being part of Outreach, especially writing the script for the Climate Crew video and filming with students and teachers.

Mission Leader: Containers for Change
Sienna Ford, Year 9

I joined Climate Crew because I wanted to help improve the school environment at DSHS and help out with keeping it clean and sustainable. Implementing things such as Containers for Change are nice, easy ways to do just that. I love the fact that just about anyone can join and we all have the same end-goal; to help make our school more sustainable and functional while also bettering its environment.

The Climate Crews Environmental Sustainability Policy has been approved by the school’s executive team and signed off by the principal, Mr Peter Lillywhite.
